SEO technologies constantly change and are incomprehensible for many people. Creation of an attractive design that would also be friendly to the search engines is one of the difficult to achieve aims when we optimize web-design for search engines. If you’re a designer, if your design is friendly to the search engines?
There is still a lot of misunderstandings around the theory of SEO in societies of designers having some knowledge and operating with outdated information. As soon as a designer comes to understand the value of optimization, there is a difficulty: how to leave the appearance of the website attractive and, on the other hand, make it friendly to search engines.
Designers love beautiful sites and SEO loves optimized content and code, but none of them should not deceive each other, as now, both are important. It inspired me to write a list of nine tips for SEO; it will help you leave a wonderful site optimized for search engines.
The old methods are no longer suitable
Optimization can be difficult to maintain because SEO technology constantly changes. Today, optimization does not mean that the site should look ugly as it was some time ago. Forget what you know about the meta-tag keywords and overloading the content with keywords; those days are over. It is a plus point for designers because the search engines love good content written in natural language. Such metrics like keyword density which spoil the look of the site are in the past.
If you are a designer for a few years, start from the beginning and examine the search engine optimization from good sources. Do not let the outdated tactics to think that the pages should be overloaded with keywords.
Links show to search engines the content of the pages that they refer to. It works for internal and external links. The words that you use in the design for quoting other pages play a big role. Now there is no need to say “click here” or “see here”.
Design attracts links
Good news for designers. Most of the time SEO is aimed at attracting links from other parts of the web. Amazing that this part of the web loves great sites. Good design improves the trust.
If you develop excellent sites, send them to special exhibitions such as galleries and CSS catalog sites.
Search engine bots are browsers
Let’s talk a bit about tactics.
# – this symbol named hash is a very powerful SEO tool in the hands of the developer who knows what to do with it. Hash creates an element in URL address which ignored by search engines and address will not be unique.
There are many options for using the hash. The designer can give each employee profile “# name” and these nearly duplicate pages will be treated by search engines as a single page.
Sometimes Flash is good
Ask anyone who is engaged in SEO and he will tell you that the Flash is not very suitable for optimization. And those who read SEO-News will say that Flash is indexed and recognized. How a designer can have to deal with Flash?
Despite the fact that Google is constantly improving, we must not depend on it. Here are some basic rules for the Flash-sites:
- Don’t include the entire site at one page;
- Do not use Flash for navigation;
- Do not include important content in Flash.
Search Engines barely see Flash; do not use it for important elements of the page. Use Flash for design of the elements and unimportant content. Flash can be used when creating a user-friendly design.
Replacement of images with CSS
Using CSS to design elements, on the one hand, makes a good appearance of the site, and, on the other hand, it is friendly for SEO.
Remember that Google says: “If there is a hidden text on the website or hidden links that are used to deceive users, the website will be removed from the Google index and will no longer be displayed on the SERP.”
If your aim is to improve the visible functional, it’s good. Do not use this method to overload your content with keywords or to manipulate with a hidden text.
Important links can be placed in the footer
If your website has uncomfortable design, it will need a tough navigation. The use of a solid footer will be a good solution. Sometimes footer looks characterless, and sometimes it emphasizes the content that you want to have a good weight. However, this part of the site may look impressive and creative.
