start website optimization

What do they mean under “optimization”?

If we consider the notion “optimization” in computer science, this term means “modification of the system in order to increase its effectiveness”. In other words, optimizing the site, we aim to increase its efficiency. Completely different indicators can be efficiency metrics, it depends on the type of the site and its purposes. If a certain modification of the site bring this site closer to the goal, then you can call this optimization.

Drawing an analogy with the makeup on the face as a sort of modifications in order to obtain success, than the optimization will be as follows:

The beauty of different parts of the site (title, content, code) is also able to bring us closer to the goal (improving the positions in the search or improve the conversion of visitors).

What do they mean under “over-optimization”?

Over-optimization is excess of measures. Your website will overloaded with information (for example, in domain name, in URL address, in links or in HTML code). If we continue the analogy with the makeup on the face, the over-optimization will look like this:

The reason of over-optimization often lies in the wrong determining website performance metrics. Why over-optimization is bad?

Imitation. In this case, it’s imitation of relevance. It the site is over-optimized, it is not relevant to the requests (keywords with which this site is optimized), it just imitates this relevance.

Decrease of conversion. Any excess of the measure reduces the conversion, as headers and content become unreadable (not just on the site but also in the search results). Accordingly, a lot of search queries, many visitors but very low conversion. Your website must be for human but not for search engines.

Attraction sanctions from search engines. Over-optimization is often comparable with over-spam (oversaturation of content with keywords); search engines monitor these signals and try not to show such sites high in SERP. The keyword density of over 10% will certainly be seen as spam.

Example of over-optimized title:

TITLE over-spam

Such example can be not only in title but in other meta-tags like description, keywords etc.

<H1> Spam </ H1> – Example of over-spam of titles for the content.

Nesting tags

In addition to the over-spam of the content with keywords, a specific nesting of html-tags in order to increase the weight of the needed words on the page is also can be considered as over-spam. This may include the following variants:

nesting of html-tags

Avoid that if you don’t want to be punished by search engines!

Hiding the content

Hiding the content from visitors, in some cases, it suggests that it is indented for search engines. It inevitably leads to the sanctions.

Links over-optimization

Links are also a text content and their over-spam leads to various filters. The same keywords from all external links lead to the neglect of most of them.

Be attentive to your website and to your visitors. Create the websites for people and not for bots.
